Fume Hood Requirements for Labs

HVAC Requirements for Laboratory Safety

Fume hoods do not determine the CFM of the system, but will get a range that is required for engineers and hvac contractors. Pending on the type of chemicals/heat etc that are being used in the fume hood along with safety requirements set by environmental health and safety specialists, CFM is determined by the face velocity that will need to be achieved at a certain height. The below chart shows 18”, which is considered the highest sash height for safety in active usage. VAV hvac systems will have a set face velocity and the CFMs change with sash height. The below chart can be used for Eliminator and Solution Series bench hoods.

Electrical Requirements

All fume hoods start with an LED light and a light switch. Pending on the configuration of the fume hood and what electrical receptacles are added will determine the number of circuits to the hood and the amps required. If there are no outlets on the hood, the hood as standard has a light switch and an LED light that draws less than 1 amp. We use 20amp GFIs, so the number of amps required depends on number of receptacles and what is being plugged into them.

Plumbing Services

All pre-plumbing at the factory can either have the plumbing terminate at the top of the hood or toward the bottom of the hood. See below for the approximate locations that the services will be located so rough ins can be done. Please note that if plumbing services are going down, the epoxy top oval cutouts on each side are the locations for rough in. All epoxy top sizes will have locations in the same area.
